The Relative Lens-Source Proper Motion in MACHO 98-SMC-1

We present photometric and spectroscopic data for the second microlensing event seen toward the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), MACHO-98-SMC-001. The lens is a binary. We resolve the caustic crossing and find that the source took 2∆t = 8.5 hours to transit the caustic. We measure the source temperature Teff = 8000 K both spectroscopically and from the color (V − I)0 ∼ 0.22. We find two acceptable...

Macho Proper Motions From Optical/Infrared Photometry

Optical/infrared photometry can double the number of proper motion measurements of Massive Compact Objects (MACHOs) relative to single band photometry. The proper motion of a MACHO can be measured by nding the ratio q of the (known) radius of the source star to the Einstein radius of the MACHO, q = s= e. A classic method for doing this is to look for the e ect on the light curve of the nite siz...

A Spectroscopic Method to Measure Macho Proper Motions

A Massive Compact Halo Object (Macho) that lenses a background star will magnify different parts of the rotating stellar disk by varying amounts. The differential magnification will cause a shift in the centroid of the star’s spectral lines during the lensing event. The shift is proportional to the ratio of the stellar radius to the projected separation of the Macho from the star. It therefore ...

On the Crab Proper Motion

Owing to the dramatic evolution of telescopes as well as optical detectors in the last 20 yrs, we are now able to measure anew the proper motion of the Crab pulsar, after the classical result of Wyckoff and Murray (1977) in a time span 40 times shorter. The proper motion is aligned with the axis of symmetry of the inner Crab nebula and, presumably, with the pulsar spin axis.

Proper motion in Cygnus A

Our recent VLBI observations of the prominent FR II radio galaxy Cygnus A with the EVN and the VLBA reveal a pronounced two-sided jet structure. from which we could derive the kinematics of the jet and counter-jet. On the jet side and on mas scales, the jet seems to accelerate from βapp ≈ 0.1 − 0.2 (Krichbaum et al. 1998) at core-separations near 1 mas to βapp ≈ 0.4 − 0.6 at r ≥ 4 mas (H0 = 100...
